Pyramids – A Wonder of Constructions

Comments Off

Pyramids stand as one of the still unsolved mysteries of ancient world. Their construction methodology was so great that even many of the researchers couldn’t figure it out on how they were constructed. You could have probably known the Pyramid of Giza. It is the only existing wonder of the ancient world. It has been in the list of wonders of the world and no modern technology could give it the apt competition.

Do you remember Imhotep of a movie on Egypt? He was not such a bad person as he was shown. He is the first Egyptian architect to document an Egyptian Pyramid or the tomb of his Pharaoh named Djozer. And thus the Egyptians had the first ever pyramid named the Step Pyramid of Djozer.

Most of all the Egyptian Pyramids were tombs of the Great kings who ruled the reign. Those kings used to bury all the needed food, cattle and even some maids to be buried with them. They used to think that they will come back to rule their reign again. And even they used to preserve their bodies which we presently call as mummifying. Till now nobody came back, but those treasures which they preserved, were the main cause of the destruction of their tombs. Poor Pharaohs!

The New Seven Wonders of World

Comments Off

In the period of over more than 125 years from the beginning of the 19th century the creation of some of the world’s most remarkable adventures of engineering were identified. These are now popular as great wonders of the world explaining so much about human creativity and the determination of the human spirit as they create out of technological effort.

Ancient Seven Wonders:
The beginning for the idea of Seven Wonders of the World occurred earlier during Herodotus (484 BC – 425 BC) and Callimachus (305 BC – 240 BC). According to their analysis, Seven Wonders of the World included the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and Lighthouse of Alexandria. Among them, only the Great Pyramid of Giza still exists. The other six were ruined by earthquake, fire, or other causes. They were evolved from various ancient Greek lists.

Moreover in the middle age several lists for ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ had been created, but modern-medieval historians did not generate those lists, so they are not genuine or credible. In the modern age wonders of the world had been organized into various categories namely Modern Wonders, Natural Wonders, Underwater Wonders and Tourist Travel Wonders, which were again sub-divided into man-made travel wonders and natural travel-wonders. Then, the Wonders of the World were chosen according to the research and suggestions of scholars and historians.

New Seven Wonders of world:
The New 7 Wonders campaign was originated in 2000 by Swiss film producer, author and aviator Bernard Weber to choose the seven new wonders of the world through the global voting campaign. His foundation said it would donate 50 percent of net revenue from the project to global good causes for restoration and preservation of monuments. The organizers had said that the competition is not planned to replace the Ancient Seven Wonders, but rather to care for other historical landmarks and improve global cultural heritage awareness.

In the year 2001 a Swiss Corporation, New Open World Corporation started the process of selecting New Seven Wonders of the World. Finally on January 1, 2006 after studying and analyzing several criteria it announced 21 finalists from nearly 200 nominations from around the world. One among them, the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, an exclusive original Wonder of the Ancient World to survive, was designated as an honorary (celebratory) wonder. From the remaining 20, seven sites were selected by worldwide vote, through Internet and phone polling. Finally, on July 7, 2007 (7/07/07, a pretty special day) seven new wonders of the world were declared in a grand ceremony in Lisbon.

The final poll produced this list of the world’s top human-built wonders The Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, Brazil’s statue of Christ the Redeemer, Peru’s Machu Picchu, Mexico’s Chichen Itza pyramid, The Colosseum in Rome, India’s Taj Mahal. Online voting and SMS system were used for the first time to select New Seven Wonders of the World. Organizers said more than 90 million votes were casted for 21 sites.

But the new wonders campaign was not recognized universally. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) announced a statement saying it has “no link whatsoever” to the vote.

Ancient Wonders Are Also Miraculous

As we have the Seven Wonders of the World at present, we used to have it in our ancient world. Herodotus was an ancient historian who lived around 484 BC-ca to 425 BC. He was said to be the first person to list the seven wonders of those ancient world. Of those seven wonders, Ishtar Gate of Babylon was replaced in 6th century with the Light House of Alexandria. Those seven wonders were

  • Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt
  • Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • Light House of Alexandria, Egypt
  • Colossus of Rhodes, Greece
  • The Tomb of Mausolus in Turkey
  • Temple of Artemis in Turkey
  • The Statue of Zeus at Olympia in Greece

But I am so sorry to say you that except the Great Pyramid of Giza other wonders are no more existing. Even there is no evidence on the exact location of their existence for some of them. We could have probably come to know the construction methodology of ancient people.

The Seven Wonders of the World

So we have our new seven wonders of the world. They say that they selected them with our opinion. We choose them through global poll. It was very successful campaign, I must say, because bringing the entire world together on a single issue is not an ordinary task. I wish someday it may happen to all those world threats like poverty, global warming, saving water, etc.

There were as many as 200 wonders off the world in the poll. Then why only 7; did any body know? We may be aware of the Greek culture, from which we are still deriving many things even today. Well even the seven number was also extracted from their belief that 7 is the number of perfection and plenity.

Herodotus of 425 BC was said to be the first man to list seven wonders of the ancient world. But of them only the Great Pyramid of Giza is existing today.

The seven wonders of the world are

  • Great wall of China of China
  • Taj Mahal of India
  • Petra of Jordan
  • Colosseum of Italy
  • Christ the Redeemer of Brazil
  • Chicken Itza of Mexico
  • Machu Picchu of Peru
