Awfully, prescription drug overdose deaths in Florida raised by 77 percent from 2003 to 2008. Abuse of prescription drugs influences not only the users, but also will have impact on their family, friends, co-workers and others. The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs not only ruins lives, but also raises criminal activity, increases costs associated with treatment and medical costs, and even results in Medicaid fraud.
Most of the people wrongly believe prescription drugs are safer than illegal street drugs as they have a genuine medical purpose. But, all Floridians, particularly teens and young adults, should recognize that prescription drugs when used for non-medical purposes are as harmful as recreational drugs.
According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, prescription drug use in youths between the age 12 to 17 raised to an alarming state to 212 percent from 1992 to 2003.
Teens or adults may start taking prescription drugs because they are intrusive or because of peer pressure. Miserably, many Floridians are addicted. An addict’s anxiety sometimes makes the person to intensify the search for the medicine in cabinet at home to out on the streets, approaching pain clinics or carrying out doctor shopping.
The Department of Health and state partners are seriously executing the 2009 legislation composing a prescription-drug-monitoring program. This controlling program will offer a very important tool to health care and law-enforcement professionals to fight against the illegal use and marketing of prescription drugs.
The department, along with the Governor’s Office of Drug Control, is involved in this important effort which will decrease future dependency, misuse and abuse of prescription drugs in Florida.
